HSAS Named #1 School in New York State for 4th Year in a Row!
For the fourth year in a row, HSAS has been named the #1 school in New York State by US News and World Report. “It’s wonderful that there are so many hard-working and successful students in New York City,” said Alessandro Weiss, principal of the High School for American Studies. “They’re all products of the city’s public school system and it goes all the way back to elementary school.” Referring to the curriculum focus at HSAS, principal Weiss also said, “Some of the thinking skills into which the humanities tap most easily are ones that other fields are looking for also. If you provide students with an excellent education, test prep takes care of itself.”
HSAS was also one of only a small number of institutions at which 100% of seniors in the Class of 2015 had passed at least one AP Exam prior to graduation.
As it that wasn't enough, the New York City Department of Education has also identified our school as a winner of the 2017 Respect for All Award. This distinction is presented to schools at which members of the community—students, teachers, counselors, staff, parents, administrators, peace officers, custodians, and our nurse—work hard to ensure that we treat one another with understanding and respect
Congratulations to everyone at HSAS!

The HSAS online auction raised over $34,000!
Many thanks to all the parents who donated and solicited items, placed bids, and invited friends & family to participate! We had 165 bidders from all over the U.S. who placed an average of 5 bids each. Top items included tickets to "Dear Evan Hansen," a private chef's table at Oceana and a 2 night stay at Mohonk Mountain House.
Please support all the businesses that supported us with donations!
Comedy Night on January 24 was a big success! The Village Underground had a full house of HSAS parents to see NYC's finest headliners perform. The final lineup was Jimmy Failla (host), Manina Franklin, Dan Naturman, Colin Quinn, and Sherrod Small.
HSAS PTA Welcomes Elected Officials!
Alumni, staff, parents & guardians were on hand last week to welcome State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and State Senator Jeffrey Klein to HSAS, as we celebrated both our 15th year and the receipt of their generous capital funding. The officials are pictured above with Mr. Weiss, and our PTA Co-Presidents, Alice Lee and Unjoo Noh.
Assemblyman Dinowitz's $125,000 will purchase new computers, laptops and classroom furniture. The $145,000 from State Senator Klein will upgrade the HVAC system that regulates temperatures throughout the school and will replace the sliding walls in rooms 106-108 to divide the space into truly soundproof zones. In addition, Senator Klein discussed having named HSAS one of his BOOST schools (Building Options and Opportunities for Students), which awards us an additional $16,000 in funding for curricular enrichment.
